What is SANS 1475?
SANS 1475 Part 1 & 2 is the South African National Standard for the servicing and maintenance (also known as reconditioning) and manufacturing of fire extinguishers, hose reels, and hydrants. SANS 1475 Part 1 deals with the requirements for the reconditioning of portable and wheeled fire extinguishers specifically. Notably, SANS 1475 states that fire extinguishers must be serviced once a year by an SABS-approved fire equipment servicing company.
Non-compliance with SANS 1475
Failing to comply with SANS 1475 by neglecting to service your fire extinguishers on an annual basis carries substantial risks:
- Safety risks: Fire extinguishers that have not been regularly serviced may not function effectively and may even be dangerous to use.
- Financial risks: A lack of well-maintained fire extinguishers puts your premises and business at higher risk of an uncontrolled fire, which could result in significant damage and financial losses.

How are fire extinguishers serviced?
Fire extinguishers may only be serviced by SAQCC (South African Qualification Certifications Committee) registered technicians. The technician will inspect the fire extinguisher unit – including the cylinder, hose, nozzle, pressure gauge, and tamper seal – for any signs of damage, and recharge the extinguisher if needed. Importantly, the technician will fill out the extinguisher service label, indicating the date of the service and that of the next required service, and the technician’s SAQCC registration number and contact details.

All fire extinguishers require annual servicing, including:
- Water extinguishers
- Foam extinguishers
- Carbon dioxide extinguishers
- Dry chemical powder extinguishers
Do you need a fire extinguisher service certificate?
Yes, a fire extinguisher service certificate is an important document that Department of Employment and Labour (DoEL) inspectors and insurance providers may request to view. A fire extinguisher certificate of service is a document confirming that your fire extinguishers have been serviced as per the requirements set out by SANS 1475 Part 1, the Pressure Equipment Regulations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and local fire safety by-laws. The certificate is issued by the SAQCC-registered technician who carries out the service.
What are a Fire Warden’s responsibilities?
Fire Wardens play an important role in the maintenance of fire equipment, including fire extinguishers. Notably, they are responsible for performing monthly firefighting equipment inspections. During their monthly inspection, Fire Wardens should check the following:
- Is the fire extinguisher’s pressure gauge within the green zone?
- Is the cylinder’s hose free of cracks or damage?
- Is the tamper seal unbroken?
- Is the operating label clear and legible?
- When is the extinguisher due for its next service?
- Is all firefighting equipment signage clearly visible and in good condition?
In addition, Fire Wardens also have the following responsibilities:
- Conduct regular assigned functions relating to fire prevention and control
- Maintain communication with the Fire Warden Coordinator
- Assist security and the Communications Controller to warn staff and the public of fire or dangerous situations
- Ensure that their firefighting training and certifications are up to date
- Ensure that they are confident and able to carry out firefighting activities
