Heritage Month in South Africa, celebrated each September, is a time to reflect on the nation’s rich tapestry of cultures, histories, and traditions. While many associate cultural exploration with expensive outings, numerous free and low-cost experiences are available throughout the country. From museums and walking tours to vibrant festivals, there’s something for every budget.

1. Iziko Museums of South Africa (Cape Town)
Iziko offers several museums that delve into South Africa’s diverse heritage. Notably, the Iziko South African Museum showcases natural history, while the Slave Lodge provides insights into the country’s colonial past. On 24 September, these museums, along with the Bo-Kaap Museum and Groot Constantia Manor House, offer free entry, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the nation’s history at no cost.

2. Lwandle Migrant Labour Museum (Western Cape)
Situated in Somerset West, this museum highlights the experiences of migrant workers during apartheid. It’s the first township-based museum in South Africa and offers a poignant look into the challenges faced by many during that era.

3. Donkin Heritage Trail (Port Elizabeth)
This self-guided 5km trail winds through the heart of Port Elizabeth, linking 51 historical sites that showcase the city’s colonial past. It’s an excellent way to explore the area’s heritage on foot.
