Safaricom’s youth-focused platform, Safaricom Hook, is making waves in Western Kenya, empowering young people with technical, digital, creative, and life skills through a series of impactful engagements under the M-PESA Sokoni Caravan.
The initiative reached thousands of youths across Siaya, Vihiga, and Kisumu, equipping them with practical tools to thrive in today’s economy.
Technical Training in Siaya
At Siaya National Polytechnic, over 2,000 young people participated in masterclasses covering plumbing, electricals, hospitality, fashion, and design. Graduates received certificates of completion, with top performers awarded sewing machines, mobile phones, blenders, safety boots, dust coats, and engineering kits to kickstart their careers.
“We want young people to walk out of school not just with knowledge, but with real tools they can use to start a business, get a job, or pursue their passion,” said Fawzia Ali-Kimanthi, Chief Consumer Business Officer at Safaricom PLC. “That’s what Safaricom Hook is all about, giving youth the mindset, opportunities, and support to thrive.”
Boda Boda Safety in Vihiga
In Vihiga County, the Safaricom Hook Boda Boda Youth Forum at Mbale trained 250 riders in First Aid, road safety, and health awareness, in partnership with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and Kenya Red Cross. The sessions addressed critical needs in the high-risk boda boda sector, a lifeline for many communities.
“We appreciate Safaricom for bringing this training to us. It shows they understand what young people in smaller towns go through daily,” said James Mukoya, Boda Boda Chairperson at Mbihi Stage, Mbale.
Creative Spotlight in Kisumu
In Kisumu, the Visual Arts and Talent Showcase at CITAM Hall in Nyalenda drew 200 contestants who showcased their talents in spoken word, music, dance, drama, and visual art. Participants received mentorship on monetizing their skills and leveraging digital platforms to turn passion into sustainable income.
