Samsung Electronics Company plans to begin selling a trifold smartphone later this year, joining rival Huawei Technologies Company in exploring a relatively untested market.
Acting mobile and consumer electronics chief T.M. Roh disclosed the plan on Wednesday on the sidelines of the company’s Unpacked event in New York, where Samsung unveiled three foldable smartphones as part of a strategy to reinforce its leadership in the category.
The company is gearing up to compete with Huawei while attracting users ahead of Apple Inc.’s anticipated entry into foldables next year. The Chinese company unveiled the world’s first trifold smartphone, the Mate XT, in September.
“We are working hard to release the trifold by the end of the year,” Roh told reporters in New York. The company hasn’t decided on a name for the gadget.
