When you are going through a difficult time, it’s important to know the benefits of talking about your mental health.

In an ideal world, you should be able to speak honestly about your anxiety, depression, bipolar, or other mental health issues. It’s essential to talk about your own mental health and its impact on your life. With roughly 1 in 5 people affected by mental health issues, you can rest assured that you are not alone.

The negative stigma still makes it difficult to discuss mental health issues openly. If more people start to open up about their mental health, we could break down this unnecessary stigma. We should discuss mental health openly and have honest conversations about how we truly feel. We must also understand the benefits of talking about mental health and encourage others to talk openly about it.

The 4 Benefits Of Talking About Your Mental Health

Removing the stigma – By discussing mental illness more regularly, we can debunk the myths about the topic and help remove the stigma surrounding mental health issues.

Realising it is more common than you think – More than 30% of South Africans have experienced a depressive, anxiety, or substance use disorder. It proves that you are not alone in your struggles, and talking about mental health should be more acceptable.

Learning about treatment options – Not talking openly about mental health means that too many people miss out on the treatment they need for their conditions. There are many ways to treat mental illness effectively, and you can live a normal life when you learn how to manage your symptoms properly.

Decreasing the risk of suicides – Unfortunately, poor mental health could lead to a higher risk of suicide. An international study found that over 90% of people who die by suicide had mental health disorder symptoms. To decrease the risk of suicide, we must normalise conversations and treatment of mental health problems.

Mental health is HEALTH! Your mental health condition affects how you think, feel, and act. It’s important to discuss it openly and encourage others to seek professional help when they need it.

Who Should I Talk To?

It will be highly beneficial to your well-being to talk to someone about any form of depression, anxiety or stress you are experiencing. Bottling up your emotions could potentially turn into a bigger issue. Talking will allow you to express your feelings and give others a chance to help you through your difficulties.

If you cannot talk to a trusted family member, friend or mentor, please reach out to a doctor or therapist. Alternatively, you can Whatsapp or call the friendly 24/7-Helpline on 072 7900 506 for advice.
