What should I look for when selecting a first aid training provider?
In order to comply with the General Safety Regulations of the OHS Act, make sure that your first aid training provider is accredited by the following bodies:
- Department of Employment and Labour (DoEL)
- South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA)
- Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO)
In addition, keep the following in mind when selecting first aid training in South Africa:
- Theoretical and practical elements: Hands-on, practical experience is an essential element of a high-quality first aid course. Choose a course that includes both theoretical and practical elements, allowing you to practice core first aid skills like administering CPR, controlling bleeding, splinting a fracture, putting a casualty into the recovery position, etc.
- Training facilities: Select a provider that has dedicated training centres and well-maintained training equipment and resources, including CPR manikins, first aid kit consumables (bandages, dressings, gloves, splints, etc.), and AED training units.
- On-site training option: Some training providers offer on-site training for larger groups.
- Track record and reputation: Check online review platforms and star ratings to gauge the reputation of potential providers before making a booking.
- Course duration: To cover the required content and offer delegates sufficient practical experience, a First Aid NQF Level 1 course must be offered over two days. Avoid any providers advertising one-day First Aid NQF Level 1 courses.
- Certificate delivery time: Choose a training provider that commits to delivering your first aid certificate within a turn-around time of two weeks or less after completion of the course.
- CI certificate number: All first aid training providers recognised by the Department of Employment and Labour (DoEL) have a unique CI number, which should be displayed on your first aid certificate.
