SYDNEY, Monday 22 December 2025 — Greenpeace Australia Pacific has  warned the federal government’s new fuel reservation coverage dangers retaining us hooked on a polluting business that solely cares about its personal income.

The Albanese Authorities in the present day introduced a brand new fuel reservation coverage requiring exporters to order between 15 and 25 per cent of fuel manufacturing for the home market. The coverage will apply to fuel contracts entered from in the present day however will come into impact from 2027.

Geoff Bice, Campaigner at Greenpeace Australia Pacific, stated: “This reservation coverage confirms what Australians have recognized for years: handing management of our power market to multinational fuel corporations has been an enormous failure. Whereas they rake in billions, households have been squeezed and our communities and setting are paying the value.

“Whereas this coverage does make some lengthy overdue steps to curb the export rorts, it’s alarming that the federal government is constant to double down on new fuel — regardless of the clear actuality that Australia already has greater than sufficient fuel to fulfill our home wants. Just some weeks in the past the federal government introduced it was opening up the Otway Basin in Victoria for harmful offshore fuel exploration, for fuel that we don’t even want.

“If applied successfully, this reservation coverage ought to imply no new fuel tasks are wanted — however with out sturdy guardrails, it dangers entrenching our dependence on costly, dangerous fossil fuels even additional.

“Opening new fuel fields will solely lock us into many years of air pollution, and delay the transition to the cheaper, cleaner renewable alternate options. Creating extra fuel dependency will not be the answer. We have to urgently transfer away from the fossil fuels of the previous.
