The Income Tax Department has confirmed that today, 15 September 2025, is the last date to file income tax returns (ITRs) for Assessment Year 2025-26. According to the department’s official post on X (formerly Twitter), more than seven crore ITRs have already been filed, with the figure still rising.

“More than 7 crore ITRs have been filed so far and still counting (15th September). We extend our gratitude to taxpayers and tax professionals for helping us reach this milestone and urge all those who haven’t filed ITR for AY 2025-26, to file their ITR,” the department said. It also reminded taxpayers that its helpdesk is available round-the-clock through calls, live chats, WebEx sessions and social media support.

Deadline ends today

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) had earlier extended the original due date of 31 July to 15 September, citing extensive revisions in the ITR forms and the need for system preparedness. However, the department has made it clear that there will be no further extension beyond today. Officials have also cautioned taxpayers not to fall for misinformation. In recent days, fake messages circulating online claimed the deadline had been extended to 30 September. The IT department clarified that such reports are false and the last date remains 15 September.

What if you miss the deadline?

Taxpayers who do not file by today can still submit a belated return until 31 December 2025. But this comes with penalties:

For incomes above Rs 5 lakh, a penalty of up to ₹5,000 applies.

For incomes up to Rs 5 lakh, the penalty is capped at ₹1,000.

In addition, belated filers may lose certain benefits such as carrying forward of losses or switching between tax regimes. Interest on any unpaid tax is also applicable.

Category-wise deadlines

While today’s deadline applies to individuals, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) and small businesses not subject to audit, other categories have later due dates. For assessees requiring audit, the deadline is October 31, 2025. For those requiring transfer pricing reports, it is November 30, 2025.

Refund timelines

Taxpayers awaiting refunds can expect processing within a few weeks if details are accurate and verified. Delays are possible when large volumes of returns are being handled, but the department is liable to pay 6 per cent annual interest on pending refunds from April 1, 2025.

Growing tax base

In AY 2024-25, about 7.28 crore returns were filed. This year, filings have already crossed seven crore by deadline day, with numbers still rising. Officials say this reflects both improved compliance and the expanding tax base
