Always championing the Mother City’s world-class attractions, City of Cape Town’s Alderman James Vos is never far from the action, and when the chance comes, he’s the first to soak it all in.
A proud Northern Suburbs local, James makes the most of Cape Town’s natural beauty with his family, from scenic hikes with panoramic views (and the occasional plane spotting), to thrilling toboggan rides and quick biltong pit stops along the way.
Here are some of his favourite things to do in the city:
Tygerberg Nature Reserve
When it’s time to escape the hustle and bustle, James visits one of Cape Town’s best nature spots: Tygerberg Nature Reserve. Spanning 388 hectares, this biodiversity hotspot is home to mammals, reptiles, frogs, butterflies, and some of the most breathtaking views in the city.
“This reserve offers one of Cape Town’s most spectacular vantage points,” says James. “From here, you can take in sweeping panoramas, from the Cape Flats to Table Mountain, one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature, and even Robben Island.” Tygerberg is one of the last remaining patches of the critically endangered Swartland Shale Renosterveld. A fun activity you can do is spotting and counting the planes flying overhead. You could also take in the views with a picnic or explore one of their hiking routes.

Cool Runnings
Cool Runnings, known as Africa’s very first toboggan track, is James go-to adventure activity. Hop into a bobsled and hurtle down the 1.25 km steel half-pipe, twisting and
turning through a series of thrilling curves. It’s the perfect mix of speed and skill, a guaranteed adrenaline rush for kids, adults, and even the most seasoned thrill-seekers.
“It’s one of my favourite family spots,” he says. “It’s fun, fast, and an adrenaline rush guaranteed to put a smile on your face!”
Location: Off Carl Cronje Drive, Tygervalley Price: Children: R90 (aged 3-14); Adults: R100 (from 15 years).

Biltong at Boer and Butcher
James is a regular at Boer and Butcher in Durbanville. Born from a deep passion for natural, healthy farming methods and a love for the countryside, its people, culture, and values, this local gem offers more than just top-quality droëwors. Here you’ll find a well-stocked meat, biltong, and dairy section, along with an upstairs restaurant.
He proudly calls it “die beste droëwors dié kant van die boereworsgordyn”, loosely translated as the best droëwors this side of the boerewors curtain, a nod to Cape Town’s northern vs southern suburbs playful rivalry.
Location: 27 Main Rd, Durbanville Price: From R10.

Majik Forest
Majik Forest is tucked between vineyards and residential neighbourhoods in Cape Town’s Northern Suburbs and is one of the places James loves to visit with his family.
The main walking trail is easy to navigate, taking just over half an hour to complete. But for those in the mood to explore or cycle, a network of secret trails winds through dense forest and floral patches.
“It’s the perfect family-friendly activity to end the day,” says James. “Whether you’re walking, riding, or just soaking up the fresh air, it’s time well spent.”
Location: Van Riebeeckshof Rd, Van Riebeeckshof.
Price: Free entry.
