New cross-border conservation venture launched for the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

A brand new European Union-funded conservation initiative is ready to strengthen biodiversity safety and neighborhood livelihoods within the iconic Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, certainly one of Southern Africa’s most vital transboundary wilderness areas.

In response to African Parks, the venture was formally launched in Gaborone, Botswana, this week, with South Africa’s Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Surroundings, Narend Singh, becoming a member of authorities leaders, conservation organisations and worldwide companions for the occasion.

Funded via the European Union’s NaturAfrica programme, the initiative will see roughly €2.5 million (round R52 million) invested into conservation administration, infrastructure upgrades and neighborhood resilience tasks throughout the Kgalagadi panorama.

The 30-month venture can be applied by African Parks in partnership with the Worldwide Union for Conservation of Nature and the governments of South Africa and Botswana.

Stretching throughout huge pink dunes, fossil riverbeds and arid savannahs, the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park stays one of many area’s most outstanding conservation success tales. Established in 2000 following a bilateral settlement between South Africa and Botswana, it grew to become the Southern African Growth Neighborhood’s first transfrontier conservation space.

In response to venture companions, the brand new initiative goals to enhance protected space administration whereas creating sustainable financial alternatives for communities residing alongside the park. Plans embody tourism improvement, infrastructure enhancements and help for wildlife-based economies.

A key focus may also be on strengthening cooperation between conservation authorities and native communities, together with engagement with the ǂKhomani San neighborhood in South Africa.

Talking on the launch, Singh described the venture as a significant step ahead for regional conservation cooperation. He stated the funding demonstrates what will be achieved when governments, conservation organisations and communities work collectively to guard shared pure heritage.

The venture can be anticipated to generate momentary employment alternatives throughout implementation, significantly via infrastructure improvement and conservation administration work.

Officers say the long-term aim is to strengthen ecological resilience within the area whereas guaranteeing neighbouring communities profit extra immediately from tourism and biodiversity conservation initiatives.
